What is the difference between coaching and counseling?

The goals of coaching and counseling are very different. Counseling focuses on healing deep emotional issues typically connected to past experiences such as childhood, abuse or trauma. Counseling is also used to manage or overcome issues related to mental illness such as anxiety disorders or chronic depression.

Coaching a one-on-one, collaborative process in which a trained professional helps you achieve your personal or professional goals. Coaching however does not focus on past issues but helping clients navigate present day challenges that serve as a barrier to achieving future goals. Coaching is about moving the client from where they are to where they want to be. Clients are empowered to develop a plan while being held accountable by their coach to achieving their established outcomes.

How are We Different?

Life/Wellness coaches are not typically licensed but most have certification they received through limited formal training. SHCC offers coaching from licensed, clinical professionals who are equipped with a master's level education, are experienced clinicians and employ methods that are evidence-based. Our coaches not only provide client's the motivation, tools, and guidance necessary to move towards their future goals but they are also governed by state mandates that ensure ethical, high quality care.
